Hypnopompic hallucinations are vivid sensory experiences that occur during the transition from sleep to wakefulness, often because dream-like brain activity overlaps with waking perception. Although they can feel extremely real and frightening, especially when combined with sleep paralysis, they are generally a normal sleep phenomenon rather than a sign of mental illness.
